Got there at around 9 pm, leaving work at 3 pm was a very good idea. We made great time and had clean and clear roads the whole way there. We had dinner at a nice family restaurant, which was very good and homey. We got to the hotel, met up with some friends and played some Boggle (I love Boggle!)
Saturday morning we had some breakfast that we brought in the room, then met up with our friends to go check out what the ski trails were like. We got a group of 6 to go cross country skiing while a bigger group went hiking on the same trail. It was very nice, although a little tough at first because the icy layer on top of the snow was hard to ski through, and getting used to my new boots and bindings. Anyways, it did go really well after a bit, and I'm much happier with the new bindings, they're so much easier to work with and the boots are millions of times better than the old three-pin toe ones. We had brought the little FRS radios that allowed the slower and faster ski groups to keep in touch throughout the outing, but more fun was how we used them between the cars on the way to and from the ski site. We played name that tune, used trucker speak, and all sorts of stuff between the cars. It really made the ride feel so much faster.
Some of the guys went hot tubing after skiing, while I chatted with Jen about our friend's wedding she attended. We then went out to dinner at the greek restaurant and had a good meal with a couple of our friends. After dinner, which featured grilled rainbow trout, salad, potatoes, rice, wine, and then a huge piece of baklava for dessert, we waddled back to the hotel then played more Boggle with the group (which was latter ruined by some know-it-all jump-in players), and then a tetris/minesweep style game before going to bed exhausted.
Sunday we got up good and early again, had breakfast in the room again, then headed out to the canyon walk. I was really skeptical that we would actually do the walk because the weather had been so mild the ice would be too thin to walk on. Aparently the event coordinator had "checked" the conditions and thaught things would be okay, but when we drove there the road was so icy that Chris actually slid the card off the road (with me in it!) and then our friend's truck also got off the road. It was scary and riddiculous to see so many cars suffer the same fate, and eventually when things got cleared up, I called Chris and told him that we were NOT going to do the walk - it was too dangerous and the ice was just going to get more and more slippery as the sun rose. Anyhow, so the two of us plus another couple high tailed it out of there (at like 20 Km's per hour!) and hooked up with a third couple that had also turned around. It was a much better idea because in the end, someone, not on our trip, but who had done the same hike as our group, had slipped off the trail and fell 25 feet to their death. So scary.
We 6 had gotten skates and went skating on the gorgeous and thick-frozen Pyramid lake. It's been like 9 years since I last skated (I think it was with Luke, Barry and Tom on the Canal in Ottawa back in first year undergrad!) but I didn't fall, which was good.
Anyhow, because we weren't out being in a stupid dangerous situation, we were able to get back to town in good time, and then had yummy lunch at Earl's, followed by a good drive back with no problems and making great time. Got home before the Simpsons' started.
Yesterday I had the day off (YAY!) and so had time to do some clean up around the house, then went to Wem to get some gifts for Chris - also got some Vitamin C face seerum stuff from Body Shop that I am really liking. AND 4 MTV workout videos for a ridiculously low price of $35. Did one of the tapes yesterday - it was tough, but the time flew by, and I got a 30 minute workout that really seemd to be tough/effective.
Anyhow, things went very well this weekend, we had a good time doing our own thing and not worrying about everyone getting together for everything (other people had a massively crappy time - so we were extra lucky). May try to organize a summer camping trip with the group to mirror this tradition too - I think that would be a lot of fun.
